Chonburi Buffalo Race

Date: October 11, 2011

Venue: The lawn in front of Chonburi District Office

The races are taken very seriously by the owners of the buffaloes. Prizes for the first nose past the finishing line guarantee owners go to considerable lengths to ensure their buffaloes are in tip-top condition.
Clouds of dust rise as these hefty animals pound down the short course at an alarming speed, reminiscent of a stampede. The crowd roars in support of the favorites and the atmosphere is as an enthralling as watching thoroughbred race horses.
Admittedly, mites slower than a race horse, but the buffaloes are no slouches when it comes to making a short dash for glory.

Although this day of fun and competition would succeed with just the buffaloes as the celebrities, there are other activities to make it a worthwhile outing for families.
A fair with food stalls and handicrafts appeals to visitors who love authentic Thai food, snacks and sweets. Then there are the rides for children, concerts of folk music and, of course, a beauty contest where the prize is the honour of being declared Miss Buffalo.
Not exactly the most adhering of titles for an aspiring beauty queen, but it does not seem to deter contestants from seeking the limelight of the catwalk.
Here is a festival that provides photo opportunities to capture an unusual adaptation of the 100-metre dash. Well worth seeing, is always the conclusion of those who make the effort to travel to Chonburi.

Activities:

- Traditional wagon parade

- Cultural preservation parade from the government and private sectors

- Various buffalo contests such as beautiful types, funny types, etc.

- Sea mussel opening contest

- Beauty contests

- Folk games such as oiled pole climbing, rattan ball, Thai boxing, slingshot shooting, etc.

Tips for Backpacking in Thailand

From the famously cheap shopping in Bangkok to the affordable paradise of the idyllic southern islands, Thailand is a backpacker’s dream. Now the most popular destination for travelers in Southeast Asia, there’s so much to see and do that it can be hard to know where to begin planning a trip – so here’s an introduction to backpacking in Thailand for those traveling on a low budget!

Entry and Visas

Nearly all backpackers are eligible to stay in Thailand for up to thirty days without a visa and should have no problems entering the country either by air or road across the borders. Travelers hoping to stay longer can apply in advance for a sixty day tourist visa from external embassies. It costs about 1,000 baht and allows for multiple re-entries, which is handy for backpackers visiting other parts of Southeast Asia before returning to Thailand.  Read more please click here

Amphawa Floating Market: Traditional Lifestyle of Central Thai People

Posted by buchita on March 28, 2011 in Thainess, Trendy

Amphawa Floating Market - In the evening

As many important rivers flow through the center of Thailand and to the sea, they have affected central Thai lifestyle since long before recorded history. Previously, many central-Thai people built their communities by the rivers because they needed to use water in their daily life. The rivers are also a means of transportation. Nowadays, we can see and appreciate the remaining essence of old traditional Thai Lifestyle at the canal floating markets at Amphawa district, Samut Songkhram Province.

Amphawa Floating Market is one of the famous attractions of Samut Songkhram province and provides many activities for travelers especially on weekends. A great way to start your day is to make merit by giving alms, like many Thai people do. In the early morning, just after sunrise, people wake and prepare their offerings then wait for the monks. The sun reflects from the water and makes the yellow robe of the monks glow. On the still calm canal a boat slowly moves along and stops by each house. The people will then modestly add their precious offerings into the black alms-bowls.  More information please click here

The Prestige Ceremony of Mae Hong Son – Poi Sang Long

Posted by buchita on March 23, 2011 in Festivties

Poi Sang Long ceremony in Mae Hong Son

Mae Hong Son, a province of three mists located in the north of Thailand, is welcoming you to its annual ceremony of Poi Sang Long (ปอยส่างลอง) during April 4 – 7, 2011.

Poi Sang Long is a Buddhist novice ordination ceremony where boys, mostly are Shan people from Burma and northern Thailand, aged between seven and fourteen entered as a passage to study Buddhist teachings. It is a belief that those pursuing ordination will gain merit for both themselves and their parents.

The origin of this ceremony was derived from the Buddhist legend when Prince Rahula, a son of Lord Buddha, decided to have himself ordained and followed a passage to enlightenment just like his father. Prince Rahula, then, became the youngest ordained monk and the first novice of Buddhism.

Since then, with deep relevance to the legend, it becomes a tradition for young boys to enter monkhood and undertake the study of Buddhist teaching.  More information please click here
